Staff Report
Portia Flowers and her co-workers at Hospice of Lake Cumberland were recognized at the regular November meeting for their contributions to the community.
Flowers said they work to continue and improve their patients’ lives and stressed that people can be entered into the program by recommendation of their health care provider or family members.
Management of pain, medication, and general improvement of their patients’ quality of life is their focus.
“Hospice comes to where you call home,” she said. “With Hospice, you get a nurse. You get a social worker. You get a chaplain. And you get an aid.”
She said they help their patients, and they help the family to better understand things regarding care, possibilities, eventualities, and in the end, grief counseling.
She told humorous and touching stories about how they have helped families and patients to extend and improve lives of those patients.
She mentioned the Kettle Homemakers’ work making bears for young family members’ comfort.
Flowers introduced those she works with and told other stories about them as well, drawing a number of laughs.
Those in attendance at the meeting were fed by the Italian Bistro, thanks to Hospice.
The meeting recognized the recent Halloween events and their successes.
The yearly Chamber Banquet was announced as being moved to January, to better celebrate new members after the Membership Drive.
