Regional and State Cross Country Meets

Saturday, October 26th the Cumberland Co. High School Cross Country team ran in the 21 school Class A Region 2 Cross Country Championships hosted by Central Hardin High School. The number of teams advancing to the state meet from each region is determined by the number of full teams, 5 to 7 runners, entered in each race. Team scores are the total of the place finishes for the first 5 runners from each school, with the lowest score winning. This year, from Region 2, the top 5 teams in the boys race and the top 5 teams in the girls race advanced to the State Championships, along with the top 5 individuals not on those state qualifying teams.
The boys’ regional championship was the first race of the day. Cumberland Co. was represented by Senior Kaden Morgan, junior Parker Shelley, and eighth graders Isaiah Claywell, Finn Feuston, and Hudson Wilson. Parker Shelley ran an 18:25 and placed 14th. Kaden Morgan covered the 3.1 mile distance in 20:29, placing 37th. Hudson Wilson finished in 23:44, placing 50th. Isaiah Claywell turned in a time of 24:39, good for 55th. Finn Fueston ran a 25:03 and placed 56th. The boys regional team championship title went to Bethlehem, with Edmonson Co. the runner-up. The Cumberland Co. boys team total was good for eighth place. Parker Shelley was one of the top 5 runners not on those 5 qualifying teams, so he advanced to the state meet.

In the girls’ race, junior Abby Morgan covered the 3.1 mile course in a time of 23:04 and placed 20th. Eighth grader Lexi Craft ran a 24:07, placing 30th. Sophomore Abby Elmore finished in 39th place with a 26:56. The girls regional team championship was won by Owensboro Catholic with the runner-up trophy going to Green Co. Cumberland Co. didn’t have enough runners for a girls team score, but Abby Morgan and Lexi Craft were both one of the top five runners not on the state qualifying teams and they also advanced to the state meet.

The 2024 Class A State Cross Country Championships were be held at the Kentucky Horse Park Saturday, November 2nd. In the girls race, the team from Lexington Christian won the state title, Beechwood was the runner-up, and Owensboro Catholic third. Individually, Lexi Craft ran a 23:28 and placed 75th out of the 205 girls in the state meet. Abby Morgan turned in a time of 23:58 and finished 90th out of the 205 runners. Lexi’s time was 2:00 better than the time she ran at the state meet last year, and Abby’s time was a 2:51 improvement over her time at last year’s state meet. In the boys state championship race the team from Villa Madonna won the state title, St. Henry was the runner-up, and Dawson Springs third. Individually, Panther Parker Shelley covered the 3.1 miles in 19:14 and finished 84th out of the 243 runners in the boys state meet.
