At the May 20 meeting of the Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce, the names of the scholarship winners for this year were announced, as was the group honored as the chamber’s Organization of the Month.

Chamber president Liza Tucker said the candidates were all exceedingly well prepared and very professional in their interaction with interviewers.

The following were named as winners: Jordan McCloughan, Kaden Watson, Derrick Sells, Brandon Brewington, Sabrina Anderson, Karler Fletcher and Vallie Kate Carver. Those able to come to the meeting were recognized; see the photos.

As school has already let out for the summer, several were unavailable to receive their award, and some are expected to be at the next chamber meeting.

Honored as the chamber’s Organization of the Month was the Cumberland County Civic Club. They were recognized for their dedication in bringing civic involvement into the schools and their work in the community.

County Judge executive Luke King told those in attendance that the Marrowbone Tornado Shelter, located behind the Marrowbone volunteer fire department, is now open for any future weather emergencies.

Emergency Management Director Greg Cary said the building is fully functional and capable of holding 107 people. He stressed that everyone should already know where to go in the event of tornadoes or other severe storms.

Cary added that the information is available on the county emergency management system’s social media page, but here is the list:

—Cumberland County Courthouse

—Chestnut Grove Community Church

—Grace Union Baptist Church

—Marrowbone United Methodist Church

—Marrowbone Tornado Shelter

—Burkesville Baptist Church

Other topics discussed at the meeting were:
