Where Community Gathers, Hearts Heal, and Joy Lives

Special to the CCN
In the quiet rhythm of Burkesville, there’s a building on Upper River Street where something extraordinary happens every day. It’s not flashy. There’s no neon sign or billboard out front.
But inside, lives are being nourished—body, mind, and spirit.
Welcome to the Cumberland County Senior Center, where laughter echoes down the halls, friendships bloom over board games and Bingo, and a simple hot meal can be the start of a brighter tomorrow.
At the heart of it all is Director Tina Capshaw, whose warmth is as constant as the Center’s coffee pot. Tina doesn’t just run a facility—she nurtures a family. Her dedication is reflected in every program, every plate, and every smile that walks through the door.
“She’s the heartbeat of this place,” one senior shared. “Tina makes sure we’re not just taken care of—she makes sure we’re seen.”
Managed by the Lake Cumberland Area Development District’s Senior Services, the Cumberland County Senior Center is part of a larger network of 10 regional centers dedicated to promoting health, wellness, and independence for adults age 60 and over. Capshaw said, “And let’s be clear—this is not your grandma’s quiet bingo hall, and although yes, we have bingo—and it’s competitive.”
At 8am each weekday, the doors open to one of the Center’s most beloved traditions—a warm, nutritious lunch served at 11am is free to anyone 60 and older.
Each plate, cooked fresh daily at the LCADD Central Kitchen in Russell Springs and delivered hot to Burkesville.
“They offer more than food,” Capshaw said. ‘It offers connection. It offers dignity.”
She explained that the Senior Center is a lifeline for many—connecting people not only to food, but to vital services that make independent living possible. From nutritional education to in-home care referrals, transportation, utility assistance, and food support, the Center quietly holds up some of the most vulnerable members of our community with unwavering strength.
Step beyond the dining room, and you’ll find an atmosphere alive with creativity and play. There’s karaoke and cornhole matches. There are Connect Four and card games at nearly every table.
Here, puzzles aren’t just about solving—they’re about bonding. Bingo isn’t just a game—it’s a celebration.
For those craving something modern? An interactive projection tool, the OBIE Joy system, a brings tech-based play to life, keeping minds sharp while spirits soar.
It’s not just activity. It’s therapy. It’s community. It’s joy, redefined Capshaw said.
Health & Wellness Take the Spotlight
Staying healthy has never been more fun. Capshaw said the Center regularly offers evidence-based health programs like Walk With Ease, and Drums Alive—all designed to improve balance, mobility, and overall well-being in a social, upbeat environment. These programs are not only effective, they’re energizing and keep our seniors moving and motivated.
In addition to these signature programs, the Center also hosts nutrition workshops, low-impact exercise classes, and group wellness challenges that promote healthy habits and encourage friendly competition. Whether it’s dancing to a beat, walking toward better joint health, or learning how to cook nutritious meals, there’s something for everyone.
It’s not just about fitness—it’s about friendship, laughter, and feeling your best at every age. At our Center, wellness is a way of life, Capshaw related.
If you’re 60 or older, or know someone who is, stop by and discover all the Cumberland County Senior Center has to offer. You’re not just walking into a building—you’re joining a family, Capshaw said.
Doors open at 8am for Cumberland County Senior Center, (270) 864-2899 at 213 Upper River Street in Burkesville, and they don’t close until 2pm.
“This is where life gets brighter, healthier, and more connected—one smile, one song, one meal at a time,” Capshaw said.
