Award, Announcement Presentations at Chamber Gathering

Even the model on a poster at the Chamber of Commerce meeting last week was giving a thumbs up to the news when Scott Sheffield, with his wife Suzanne, broke the news that the Italian Bistro would be adding a lunch buffet in the coming weeks or months. Guest speaker Jill Lawson, from Somerset Community College’s Clinton Center, told the audience that in addition to Class-A CDL training, welding training and other vocational education, such as cosmetology, the institution works with universities across this state to enable students to succeed in four-year degree programs.

She added that there are special scholarship opportunities, and the lowest-cost two-year program in the state is available on their campus.

She pointed out to nursing graduates in the audience as alumni whose lives had been improved by their attendance at SCC.

Her presentation was received with smiles, nods, and receptive attention from the audience at last week’s Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce meeting, especially when she mentioned low-cost cosmetology services available on the campus.

The biggest reaction at the meeting, however, was to an announcement by the recipients of this month’s Business Spotlight Award winners.

The Italian Bistro, owned by Scott and Suzanne Sheffield, was the award recipient. The news that caused a great bit of quiet murmurs amongst the attendees was that the restaurant will soon be offering a lunch buffet.

In other announcements at the meeting, the Chamber’s Christmas tree ornament has arrived. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of WKYR in Cumberland County.

Chelsea Comer announced that her business, the Farmacy, on the square downtown, has hired a new employee, and she has taken on an apprentice to assist with medical-grade foot care as well as holistic healing services. Her business is located adjacent to Billy Guffey’s Art Studio.

Members of the Homemakers’ clubs reminded everyone that the Community Giveaway is coming November 14, and the donations will be accepted on the 13th at the event location, the Fairboard Building.

Rebecca Bo, with First & Farmers National Bank, reminded everyone that they are still offering a $99 closing cost promotion with the special financing or refinancing programs for first-time homebuyers.

Attendees were also reminded of the walk-through for the old school building on the campus of Cumberland County Elementary School.

There is also a Red Cross Shelter Training offered October 30 to prepare for community emergencies. Contact Greg Cary for more information.
