Close for Girls, 1 Boy Advances to State

Last Saturday the Cumberland Co. High School Cross Country team ran in the Class A Region 2 Cross Country Championships hosted by Thomas Nelson High School. Team scores were the total of the place finishes from the first 5 runners from each school. The top 5 teams in the region advanced to the State Championships along with the top 5 individuals not on those qualifying teams.
Bethlehem won the boys team competition followed by Green Co., Edmonson Co., Owensboro Catholic, and Hancock Co. Cumberland Co.’s lone entry in the boy’s regional race was senior Parker Shelley. Parker covered the 3.1 miles in a time of 18:14 and placed 11th overall. He was the first of five individuals not on one of top 5 teams to advance to the state meet.
In the girls’ competition, Owensboro Catholic won the team title followed by Green Co., Bethlehem, Hancock Co., and Glasgow. Cumberland Co. senior Abby Morgan improved her previous time on the Thomas Nelson course this season by 49 seconds, running a 25:54, and missed advancing to the state meet by 2 places. Freshman Lexi Craft improved her time on the regional course this year by 1 minute 30 seconds, turning in a 25:37. Senior Abby Elmore ran a 28:49 in the regional meet, just missing her fastest time of the season.
The Class A State Cross Country Championships will be held at Ky Horse Park this Saturday, November 1st. Parker Shelley will be representing Cumberland Co. in the boys’ race which begins at 2:00 CST.
