Give Away a Toy Day a Huge Success

Give Away A Toy Day Was made possible by the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency’s gift, but would not have happened without the group of local volunteers pictured here.
With the help of 40+ volunteers, the Cumberland County Team successfully distributed thousands of dollars of brand-new toys just before Christmas. High school students from the Civics Club, as well as middle school students from Mentoring the Middle, joined adult volunteers for the first-ever Give Away a Toy Day in Cumberland County.
The volunteers not only distributed toys to local kids, but the group also took gifts to other locations within the county.
Students and adults visited the area’s nursing home, Cumberland Valley Manor, and enjoyed giving gifts and exchanging smiles. Additionally, our youth stopped by the Cumberland County 911 Center to drop off smaller toys that law enforcement officers and first responders can keep in their vehicles, in case they have to respond to a call where young kids are involved.
“I’ll be the first to admit that things like this come with a certain amount of risk. You never know how many people will show up to help or participate. You don’t know what the weather might do or what the public’s reaction will be to a new thing. We were incredibly fortunate to not only have a large group in attendance, but also a group of some of the most caring people in all of Cumberland County who showed up to help distribute over $100,000 in toys from Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency. People got to see Cumberland County at its best today,” said Judge/Executive King.
“Thank you to every person who had a hand in making this operation possible. This was an incredibly successful event and could not have happened without a lot of help. I, myself, was amazed to see so many members of the younger demographic working together with so many other more experienced volunteers. Getting to be part of this event made for a very Merry Christmas,” said High School Civics Club Judge/Executive Sadie Arterburn.
After that event, the Cumberland County Team hopes to have another similar Give Away a Toy Day in the spring of 2025 and is currently exploring having the event on a Saturday to increase the number of participants who may otherwise have weekday obligations.
