The Cumberland County Panthers won three straight last week, all hard-fought battles.

The team started off the home series with Allen County-Scottsville, then hosted Russell County and Southwestern.

Against Scottsville the boys had a resounding 47 to 61 win, on Tuesday. But Friday night was quite the nail-biter, with even the overtime being a back-and-forth battle that the Panthers pulled away with, 83-87.

Saturday night, hosting Southwestern, the Panthers had an even smaller margin with a 69-70 victory.

In that game the teams overall shooting was 64.7% from the free-throw line at 53.2% from the field, but only 45% when shooting three pointers.

Overall leading scorer was Noah Wood with 16 points followed by Gavin Craft with 14 and Zachary Harwood with 11.

Connor Cash inbounds the ball setting up the play that would increase the Panthers lead in overtime, after sinking the three-point shot establishing that lead.

Wood and Aiden Branham were both 100% when shooting for three-points against the Warriors.

In the Russell County game, the team was 77.8% at the free-throw line but just under 50% from the field, and when shooting for three.

That high percentage at the free-throw line and making fewer mistakes by fouling, was the nail in the coffin for the Lakers in this matchup.

Leading scorers in that game were Craft with 23, Wood with 19, Connor Cash with 17 and Harwood with 12.

In the game against Scottsville’s Patriots the Panthers were able to go deeper into their bench with more sophomores taking to the court.

Overall, the team shot 46.9% and 70% at the free-throw line. Leading scorers for the Panthers were Byron Crawley 16 points, Wood 13 points and Harwood 12 points.

Look for this week’s results in next week’s paper as the Panthers host Barron County Monday and Metcalf County Friday.
