The heavy rains beginning Friday left roads underwater especially in Adair County as of Saturday morning, but by Saturday afternoon four roads were affected in Cumberland County. At the same time seven roads in Casey County and one road in Clinton County was closed due to flooding.

The roads impacted in Cumberland County were KY-704, KY-912, KY 496 and KY-3115.

As of Monday morning, Amber Hale with the local Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District reported road closures still in Wayne, Rockcastle, McCreary, Casey, Adair and Clinton counties.

County Judge-Executive Luke King said, “Right now Homer Grider Road is still out due to the surface of a bridge washing away.”

But King said there had not been any injuries due to the flooding, and property damage seems to be limited to basement flooding.

Emergency Management Director Greg Cary said that in addition to the damage to Homer Grider Rd., Leatherwood Road suffered the loss of black top on the approach to a bridge, but County rogue crew have already addressed that.

The culverts that make up Homer Grider Road are easy to see now that the flood water has peeled off the concrete overlaying them. County Judge-Executive Luke King has said he will be requesting emergency state funds to make the repair.

“The places that usually flood when we have heavy rains flooded, “Cary said. “There are still a lot of culverts that need cleaning out after the storm as well.”

With four Code Red notifications and repeated National Weather Service broadcast it was no surprise that it was a rainy weekend, but the county largely missed out on the heavy damage sustained in other parts of Kentucky.
