At last Monday’s fiscal court meeting magistrates heard from Emergency Management Director Greg Cary that the necessary parts to complete the tornado shelter in Marrowbone were not installed by the contractor.

In a previous meeting at the court, he told magistrates that the contractor on the project was not responding to calls and was given permission to use a local electrician to complete the work, which is installation of a remote door lock on the facility.

He said that this past week’s meeting that he and the electrician had discovered that not all the parts were installed, after verifying what was needed with the company which makes the remote lock trigger.

Cary was asked to try once again to get a response from the contractor, before the county seeks out other means of dealing with them.

County Judge-Executive Luke King said that “stronger action” may be necessary, as “tornado season is coming, and we can’t use it as it is.”

Monday morning Cary said he had spoken with the owner of C & C contracting who reportedly indicated he was not aware of the issue but would make it right.

King said he was encouraged by this news but would wait and see. “As it stands, we have one door we can’t lock and another we can’t unlock which means the shelter is unusable.”

In other business before the court monthly reports were given by the ABC director, jailer, and sheriff.

During the meeting King reminded the magistrates that road reports requested by the state need to be finished up and submitted.

A $5,000 grant was announced, which is earmarked for dispersing weather radios to county residents.

King stressed that anyone who has already received a radio from the county or state previously is not eligible to receive a second.

Later in the meeting two pick-up trucks and a dump truck, which has reportedly not run in over a year, were declared as surplus and ought to be auctioned off.

The issue of the inter-local agreement with the city for the 911 Dispatch program was tabled, so the magistrates could review the city’s proposal.
