The board of directors for the Cumberland County extension office met last week to consider the tax rates to be set for this year.
The University of Kentucky’s Area Extension, Director Jeff Casada, told the board what the compensating rate, the 4% increase rate, and the rates for last year were.
After some discussion the board voted to keep the same rates as last year, rather than the compensating rates.
Last year’s rates were 0.056 for real property and 0.0912 for personal property. According to Casada, the compensating rate for 2025 would have been 0.057 and 0.0955.
He pointed out that the motor vehicle rate has been the same for decades, 0.039 per thousand dollars of value.
The board opted not to add a tax on aircraft and documented watercraft not registered in the state.
After that, Casada pointed out that the “Big Beautiful Bill,” passed earlier this year, ended the education grant previously provided to the county, which terminated a position for one of the staff at the office.
Dianne Hawyard was reportedly considering retirement anyway. Casada said the federal funding would end on Sept. 30, affecting 70 counties across the state.
The board was told that recent repairs and improvements to the building were good, but a growing sinkhole on the property was becoming a concern.
It was suggested that the office contact the office of Karst Studies for advice if possible.
